BEVERLY CENTRE
MIDNAPORE

On the strength of our work on the Beverly Centre 90th Avenue, Abugov•Kaspar was asked to design this assisted living / aging in place home in the Midnapore neighborhood. As with the Beverly Centre on 90th Avenue, our design seeks to mitigate the institutional atmosphere. This is achieved in part through a range of dining areas that vary in theme and style, and that offer a wide assortment of menu choices made possible by the facility’s large kitchen.

  • The project includes a 2-storey, noncombustible wing for long term care units, and a 3-storey, non-combustible wing for assisted living units.

  • Assisted living accommodations include 22 bachelor apartments, 24 1-bedroom apartments, and 4 2-bedroom apartments.

  • The first phase of project created 183 beds for long-term care, with an additional 64 beds introduced in a 3-storey expansion.

  • The use of masonry throughout the development creates a visual relationship between the interior and exterior. With connotations of stability and tradition, the masonry unifies the design while creating a comfortable and familiar environment.

  • The 8,670 square metre facility is rich with amenities, including restaurant-style dining, multiple social rooms, and laundry and kitchen services. The facility also includes a landscaped interior courtyard for residents.

BEVERLY CENTRE
90TH

Abugov-Kaspar carried out a major addition and renovation to the Beverly Centre, a long term care facility originally built in the 1960s. As a part of this work, we provided interior services to recreate the centre with a hospitality-like atmosphere in order to counter the institutional nature of the facility. This was an early project in what has become a successful practice in long term care facility design.

The Beverly Centre Glenmore demonstrates some of the design approaches that have become standard in our long term care projects. Natural light is introduced through skylights, including a large skylight spanning a two-storey atrium encircled by second-storey terracing. The institutional-style cafeteria was replaced with a number of smaller, more intimate components, each with their own distinct atmosphere enabling residents to choose from a variety of restaurant-like experiences. Redesign of the kitchen supports the expanded array of dining areas and menu choices. Finishes are selected to assist way finding, with colour coding used to identify wings and floors. Colours are also selected for psychological impacts that relate to function, such as fostering calm or stimulating appetite.

As a part of this work, we provided interior services to recreate the centre with a hospitality-like atmosphere in order to counter the institutional nature of the facility. This was an inaugural project in what has become a successful practice in long term care facility design. The Beverly Centre 90th Avenue demonstrates some of the design approaches that have become standard in our long term care projects:

  • Hospitality merges with health care through spatial and functional planning, finishes, décor, and furniture selection. For instance, rest, lounge, and activity areas are laid out in a palette of natural materials and warm colors.

  • Natural light is introduced through skylights, including a large skylight spanning a two-storey atrium encircled by second-storey balconies.
