CITADEL WEST
This commercial office building is an
adaptive reuse of a four story building.
Located in Calgary’s Beltline, Citadel
West shares a site with Castello, a
new condo tower also designed by
Abugov•Kaspar.
-
Citadel West is an adaptive reuse of a four-storey office building. The original building was stripped down to the structure; three additional storeys were added, along with a new lobby. The exterior was cladded in a contemporary corporate design with prefinished composite rainscreen panels.
-
The design makes reference to the structure of the original building with horizontal coarsing at the fifth storey.
-
A new lobby/entry hall on the east side and a new facade give the builidng a bright and contemporary corporate image.
-
Underground parking below the residential tower accommodates all visitor, office, and residential needs. An exterior plaza between buildings creates a transitional public space.

INTERIOR DESIGN
Abugov-Kaspar also designed interiors for the entrance and lobby areas. The bright, clean space has an entrance with glazing reaching the full two-storeys of the lobby volume. A second-storey corridor opens out to the lobby space via a glass rail, with second-storey interior windows increasing daylighting and giving a sense of openness.
-
A feature wall with etched, back-painted glass panels wraps onto the ceiling, creating a distinct seating area that maintains a relationship to the building’s overall aesthetic.
-
The palette reinforces the relationship between the interior and the exterior of the building, which is clad in white aluminum rainscreen panels.
