ALBERTA HOTEL & ANNEX

The Alberta Hotel and Annex is a landmark historic building at the intersection of Stephen Avenue and 1st Street SW. Built from 1888-1890, the Hotel is Calgary’s oldest existing hotel building, distinctive for its sandstone construction and roundhead windows.

  • The building is designated as a Municipal Historic Resource, and is part of the Stephen Avenue National Historic Site of Canada.

  • Abugov•Kaspar provided architectural and interior renovations to create retail spaces at and below grade, with a restaurant above. The scope of work included restoration of the original facade and interior walls, with the addition of upgrades to windows, building envelope, electrical, and mechanical systems.

  • Murrieta’s, the top floor restaurant, extends through what was formerly an interior light well. We developed a restaurant floorplate enclosed by the sandstone and brick exteriors of the Hotel and Annex, with an open atrium below a large skylight.

  • The Cellar, a wine merchant located below grade in the building's former boiler room, is accessed from a separate entrance on Stephen Avenue.

THE CELLAR

Located below grade, The Cellar is a wine merchant in the Alberta Hotel and Annex. A masonry and sandstone building on the corner of Stephen Avenue and 1st St. SW. in Calgary, the Alberta Hotel and Annex typifies the century-old heritage buildings that lend the historic pedestrian street its unique character. Abugov-Kaspar provided heritage-sensitive renovations to both buildings to create retail spaces at and below grade, with a restaurant on the upper floor.

  • This unique space originally housed boilers for the Hotel, and is now a striking interior stripped down to reveal the original sandstone walls.

  • A custom sales counter was created using sandstone and stainless steel banding. Brick is used throughout to complement the original walls.

INTERIOR DESIGN

MURRIETAS

The Alberta Hotel and Annex typifies the century-old heritage buildings that lend the historic pedestrian street its unique character. Abugov-Kaspar provided heritage-sensitive renovations to both buildings to create retail spaces at and below grade, with a restaurant on the upper floor.

  • The scope of work included restoration of the original facade and interior walls, with the addition of modern upgrades to windows, building envelope, electrical, and mechanical systems.

  • The top floor restaurant extends through what was formerly an interior courtyard. We created a floorplate enclosed by the exteriors of the Hotel and Annex, with an open-atrium dining area below a grand skylight.

  • Contrasting masonry and brick surfaces are tied together through the use of wainscoting and tile mosaics.

  • A second-story patio along the Stephen Avenue elevation creates an interface with the pedestrian street that draws attention to the restaurant. The design helps enliven the public sphere with live music and the bustle of the restaurant filtering out from the patio.
